Background of the Study
Traditional wrestling competitions in Ezza North are more than just physical contests; they are vibrant cultural events that foster community bonding and celebrate indigenous heritage. These competitions, embedded in centuries-old traditions, serve as platforms for communal expression, conflict resolution, and the reinforcement of social values. They bring together people of all ages, strengthening community ties through shared participation and collective celebration. However, the rise of modern sports and entertainment options has begun to challenge the relevance of traditional wrestling. Recent studies suggest that while contemporary entertainment is on the rise, traditional wrestling remains a crucial medium for cultural expression and community solidarity (Ifeoma, 2023; Nduka, 2024). This study evaluates the evolving role of traditional wrestling in community bonding, exploring its cultural significance and the factors affecting its sustainability (Emeka, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Traditional wrestling competitions in Ezza North face declining participation and diminished cultural authenticity due to the increasing popularity of modern sports and entertainment. This shift threatens the role of wrestling as a key instrument for community bonding and cultural preservation. Reduced engagement in these events may lead to the erosion of traditional values and the loss of a unique form of social cohesion. Despite their importance, there is limited research on how to revitalize traditional wrestling to maintain its community function. This study addresses the need to evaluate the current status of traditional wrestling and propose strategies for its revival.
